I want to investigate how urban park maintenance timing affects insect communities. During my undergraduate ecology project, I compared observations from lawns mowed on different schedules. I expected that differences in vegetation would help explain the insects we recorded, but I became increasingly interested in the timing of our visits. A count made shortly after mowing may describe a different recovery stage compared to one taken several weeks later. I am applying to Bellhaven University’s PhD in Ecology to study how management schedules and sampling design shape our understanding of urban habitats.
For my final-year project, I worked with a faculty supervisor to organize repeated observations at campus and municipal sites. I maintained the field log, recorded vegetation conditions, and checked the observation records before analysis. I contacted site staff and marked unconfirmed dates when maintenance dates were missing. I then compared the patterns using only visits with reliable maintenance records and discussed the reduced coverage with my supervisor. This did not resolve every source of uncertainty, but it made the limitations of the comparison explicit.
My initial draft attributed differences between sites too readily to their mowing schedules. The sites also differed in shade and nearby planting, and our project had not assigned management treatments experimentally. Revising the discussion required me to distinguish an association from an explanation of what caused it. I became interested in how a study could separate the effects of maintenance from those other conditions. A subsequent statistics seminar improved my ability to critically read papers using repeated observations and consider which questions our dataset could reasonably address.
During my doctoral study, I would like to investigate whether changes observed after mowing persist across a growing season and whether their pattern differs among insect groups. An initial project could combine repeated surveys with a carefully documented maintenance schedule. Where collaboration with land managers permits it, an experimental comparison could help test explanations that an observational study leaves unresolved. The appropriate design would depend on access, feasible sampling effort, and advice from supervisors. I would present a defined problem to the program while remaining open to revising the question as I learn more about the system.
Bellhaven’s Urban Ecology Group would be ideal for this work because it combines field studies with quantitative training.
