Common App Essays題目更新:申請必讀事項

為了擴大學生受高等教育的機會以及增進多元化，近幾年美國大學在申請上有了相當顯著的改變。美國大學理事會(The College Board) 更新了SAT測驗，從2016三月起實施，現在則是Common Application的essay題目變得更廣泛了。

如果你是申請2017–2018的秋季入學，要注意Common App essays與以往不太一樣喔。字數限制依舊維持在650字，但題目數量則更改為七個。其中大多數的題目核心都是申請者透過個人親身經驗而獲得的個人成長，但較為特別的是其中有一題允許自由發揮。

無更改的題目

#1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

#4. Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma—anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

破題技巧: 這個essay如果少了你面臨的困難與解決方法的詳細內容，就不會是一個好essay。但困難跟衝突都不是這個題目的重點，重點是為什麼這個問題對你來說如此重要，重要到你必須改變或行動。學校想知道大致上掌握你對於認知與處理潛在問題的方式，還有一點是，其結果不一定非得是成功或圓滿的，有時候失敗反而能讓我們醒悟或學習更多。 (想參考更多技巧，請點擊這裡)
注意: 大家常犯的一個錯誤是，在文章內提到了一個問題，卻沒有進而說明為什麼這個問題對自己很重要。例如，你選擇了全球暖化問題，但招生委員不是真的想了解你計畫如何解決全球暖化，而是為什麼你這麼在乎全球暖化(即你的動機)與根據你個人經驗，為什麼你認為其問題有重視的必要性。最後，essay內容必須能反映出你知識成長與情感成長。

#2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

破題技巧: 人們說韌性和毅力是成功的基石，展現出你成功潛力最佳方式是，描述一個你在追求某個令你熱血的事情時，曾經面對與處理過的挑戰。告訴大家為什麼這件事情對你這麼重要與其激勵你的動機。內容不需要專注在你”成功的解決了問題”，而是從這解決問題的過程中你學習到的「人生經驗」。這時候你可能會意識到自己的傲慢與缺點。綜合以上，內容的重點就是，這個經驗如何改變你對於問題與未來人生的觀點或看法。這次遭遇如何增廣你對世界的看法? 這次的「挫折」如何使你更成熟? 這次的經驗是否幫助你在大學生活中如魚得水，並能自在地與來自不同背景與想法的人相處? (想參考更多技巧，請點擊這裡)

#3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

題目重點著重於一個你可能沒有採取行動但內心覺得衝突的情況，更重要的是，題目從「為什麼這樣做?」換成「衝突在第一時間是如何形成的?」，換句話說，招生人員希望聽到關於某個信念或想法如何促使你批判性思考，形成自己的觀點。

注意: 建議避免討論可能冒犯招生人員的宗教或政治主題。如果你不得不談論這些話題之一，一定要專注於自己的個人發展，避免嚴厲批評別人的信仰。

#5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

新題目

#6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

這個題目在Common App essay當中是相當有趣的，我們認為這個題目的目的是為了鼓勵你大方說出你最熱衷事物。透過分享你最熱愛的事物，招收委員可以了解到你的真實面、你好奇的東西與你如何滿足自己的好奇慾望。請務必完整解釋你熱衷的事物，畢竟所有事情都有正反面。以下提供幾點思考方向:
- Are there any drawbacks to your high curiosity for this topic?
- Have you ever hit any roadblocks while pursuing this topic? If so, how did you resolve them?
- How do you restrain yourself when you feel you’re diving in too deep and losing all sense of time and engagement with the outside world? Or, does that not even matter to you?
- If you’re so fascinated by a topic, to what extremes have you gone to pursue it? Have you had to make sacrifices along the way? How did those situations change you?

#7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

Prompt 7 (任君挑選主題)其實不是新的題目，這原本是標準題目中的一題直到2013年被除去，現在又加回來了。
雖然這個題目聽起來很有趣，但我們想提醒一些注意事項。有些人可能會認為可以改寫以前的essay，然而這篇essay的目的是介紹自己。也就是說，你挑選的主題必須符合下列其中一項:
- 你的分析能力與intellectual curiosity. 如果你申請的學校有列出supplemental essays，讓你介紹更多關於你是誰以及你為什麼要申請這間學校，那麼單純只寫學術內容就可以了。但如果你的申請學校只要求Common App essay，那你可能需要選其他prompt來介紹自己喔!
- 個人成長在Prompts 1–6其實並沒有被完全涵蓋到。
注意: 不要提到在校成績、考試成績或其他在申請流程中你提交的其他內容。essay是讓你分享真實的一面，這是從文件中的數字看不出來的。同樣地，如果你改寫另一篇之前為了其他用途而寫的essay，建議你要修改以改進並增加其他資訊讓招生委員更容易了解你是誰。
推薦主題: 調查一些學校要求的supplemental essays，也許可以提供你一些靈感，像是:
- What’s your favorite book, poem, author, movie, musician, etc.?
- Who do you admire?
- Imagine it’s 50 years from now. What would you be doing?
- If you could speak with someone from the past, who would it be and what would you say?
- Stanford: Virtually all of Stanford’s undergraduates live on campus. Write a note to your future roommate that reveals something about you or that will help your roommate—and us—know you better.
- University of Chicago: Alice falls down the rabbit hole. Milo drives through the tollbooth. Dorothy is swept up in the tornado. Neo takes the red pill. Don’t tell us about another world you’ve imagined, heard about, or created. Rather, tell us about its portal. Sure, some people think of the University of Chicago as a portal to their future, but please choose another portal to write about. [Note: this school often chooses its supplemental essay topics from interesting essays written by prior students!]
- Dartmouth asks: “It’s not easy being green” was a frequent lament of Kermit the Frog. Discuss.
