class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Increasingly, AI detectors for academic writing are employed to evaluate essays, research papers, and other scholarly texts. However, this use raises an uncomfortable question for researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What if a paper is flagged as AI-generated even though a human wrote it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This concern may be especially relevant for nonnative English-speaking researchers, whose writing has previously been found to be subject to higher false-positive rates from some AI detection systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a professional academic editing company with more than a decade of experience and as the developer of the Wordvice AI Detector, Wordvice sits at the intersection of human academic editing and AI text detection. This position provides a rare perspective on how AI detectors respond to real academic writing before and after professional human editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our research team investigated this problem using <strong>135,389 pairs of academic manuscripts<\/strong> from a professional English editing service. Each pair contained the original and professionally edited versions of a manuscript.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, which was accepted to the <strong>EMNLP 2026 Industry Track<\/strong>, revealed a striking result: professional human editing alone could change an AI detector&#8217;s judgment, even when the author and underlying content remained the same. This finding raises an important question about what AI detectors actually measure when they evaluate polished academic writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_AI_Detection_in_Academic_Writing_Is_Difficult\"><\/span>Why AI Detection in Academic Writing Is Difficult<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous research has raised concerns about false positives in AI detection. For example, in a widely cited study, Liang et al. (2023) found that AI detectors often misclassified TOEFL essays written by nonnative English speakers as AI-generated. However, comparisons between different groups of writers have a critical limitation. Papers by native and nonnative speakers may differ in the following ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>topic,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>vocabulary,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sentence structure,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>writing ability,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>discipline, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>individual writing style.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These differences make determining what caused the detector to respond differently challenging. Did the detector detect AI authorship, or was it responding to linguistic characteristics of the writing? Our study approached this problem differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Made_This_Study_Possible\"><\/span>What Made This Study Possible<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We analyzed a rare dataset consisting of <strong>original and professionally edited versions of the same academic manuscripts<\/strong>. The author remained the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research remained the same. The topic and intended meaning remained the same. What changed was the linguistic form of the paper after editing by a professional native-English-speaking editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This paired-document design enabled an examination of whether changes in grammar, fluency, clarity, and academic style could affect AI detector results, while controlling for content and authorship. The dataset covered manuscripts submitted between <strong>2018 and 2025<\/strong>. For the baseline false-positive analysis, we focused on manuscripts between <strong>2018 and 2022<\/strong>, before the widespread adoption of ChatGPT and modern generative-AI writing tools. These documents were treated as a largely human-written baseline in the analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Accurate_Are_AI_Detectors_for_Academic_Writing\"><\/span>How Accurate Are AI Detectors for Academic Writing?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We evaluated <strong>13 publicly available AI text detectors,<\/strong> representing three major approaches. The results revealed substantial disagreement between detectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><th>Detector type<\/th><th>Examples<\/th><\/tr><tr><td>Token-statistic-based<\/td><td>Log-rank, Log-likelihood, Entropy, GLTR<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Zero-shot<\/td><td>Fast-DetectGPT, LastDE+, DetectLLM-LRR, DiVeye, BiScope, Binoculars<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Classifier-based<\/td><td>RoBERTa, MAGE, RADAR<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_1_False-Positive_Rates_Varied_Dramatically\"><\/span>Finding 1: False-Positive Rates Varied Dramatically<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When the detectors evaluated the same human-written academic manuscripts, their false-positive rates ranged from <strong>0.0% to 100%<\/strong>, depending on the detector. Some token-statistics-based methods classified nearly all human-written manuscripts as AI-generated. Other detectors produced false-positive rates close to zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Classifier-based detectors presented similarly substantial differences, with some producing relatively low false-positive rates and others flagging a substantial majority of the manuscripts. Two AI detectors could assess the same human-written research paper and produce very different conclusions. This contradiction is one reason an AI detector score should not be considered definitive evidence of authorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Professional_Editing_Can_Change_AI_Detector_Scores\"><\/span>Professional Editing Can Change AI Detector Scores<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most interesting result occurred when comparing each manuscript with its professionally edited version. Because both versions belonged to the same document, the differences could not be explained simply by a different author or research topic. Yet the detectors still changed their assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_2_The_Same_Editing_Produced_Opposite_Reactions\"><\/span>Finding 2: The Same Editing Produced Opposite Reactions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For several detectors, professional editing helped human-written papers appear more authentic, reducing the chances of being mistakenly classified as generated by AI. For example, the false-positive rates changed as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MAGE: Decreased by about <strong>10.7 percentage points;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RADAR: Decreased by about <strong>4.7 percentage points;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The false-positive rates of other detectors moved in the opposite direction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>LastDE+: Increased by about <strong>5.8 percentage points;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fast-DetectGPT: Increased by about <strong>4.6 percentage points;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The key point is not simply whether editing increased or decreased an AI score but that <strong>different AI detectors responded differently to the same type of legitimate human revision<\/strong>. This finding implies that the current AI detection systems do not rely on a single, consistent signal of AI authorship. Instead, their output can also be affected by the linguistic characteristics of the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_Editing_Led_to_Greater_Changes_in_AI_Detection_Scores\"><\/span>More Editing Led to Greater Changes in AI Detection Scores<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We also measured how extensively each manuscript had been edited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results revealed a systematic relationship between the editing intensity and changes in detector scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_3_Detector_Responses_Scaled_With_Editing_Intensity\"><\/span>Finding 3: Detector Responses Scaled With Editing Intensity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For detectors that tended to assign lower AI scores after editing, more extensive editing typically produced larger decreases. For detectors that tended to assign higher AI scores after editing, more editing also tended to exacerbate that increase. The MAGE detector offers a clear example. Manuscripts with relatively light editing displayed smaller changes in detector scores, whereas the scores for manuscripts receiving extensive editing shifted substantially toward the human-written classification. Similar dose-response patterns appeared across multiple detector types. Different detectors can produce substantially different results on the same human-written paper. Researchers routinely work with editors to improve grammar, readability, academic style, and clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our findings indicate that these legitimate linguistic improvements can affect AI detection scores. Therefore, a manuscript receiving a higher AI score after editing does <strong>not<\/strong>, in itself, demonstrate that generative AI was used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nonnative_Researchers_May_Need_to_Exercise_Particular_Caution\"><\/span>Nonnative Researchers May Need to Exercise Particular Caution<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous studies have reported higher AI detector false-positive rates for nonnative English writing. Our study found another dimension to this problem. The detector result can change again after a manuscript undergoes professional English editing. Keep evidence of your writing process.<\/strong><br>Retain early drafts, revision history, notes, references, and original and edited versions of your manuscript. These offer much stronger contextual evidence of authorship than a single detector score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. In our study, false-positive rates on human-written academic manuscripts ranged from 0.0% to nearly 100%, depending on the detector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_a_human-written_academic_paper_be_flagged_as_AI\"><\/span>Can a human-written academic paper be flagged as AI?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. Human-written documents can produce false positives. Our study found that some detectors incorrectly classified substantial proportions of human-written academic manuscripts as generated by AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_professional_editing_increase_an_AI_detector_score\"><\/span>Can professional editing increase an AI detector score?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. In our study, professional editing sometimes increased AI-related scores for some detectors but decreased them for others. The direction depends on the detector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Does_a_high_AI_detector_score_prove_that_AI_was_used\"><\/span>Does a high AI detector score prove that AI was used?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No. Detector scores can be affected by the linguistic properties of the text and signals related to the text origin. Therefore, they should be considered alongside drafts, revision history, and other contextual evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_AI_detectors_work_differently_for_nonnative_English_speakers\"><\/span>Do AI detectors work differently for nonnative English speakers?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous research has reported higher false-positive rates for nonnative English writing. Our study finds that professional editing, a common step for nonnative authors, can change the detector results, complicating the interpretation of such results in multilingual academic environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Did_this_study_test_Turnitins_AI_detector\"><\/span>Did this study test Turnitin&#8217;s AI detector?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No. Our study did not directly evaluate Turnitin or other proprietary commercial detectors. However, the 13 methods we tested represent many core technical approaches that inform modern commercial AI detection systems, including token-statistic-based, zero-shot, and classifier-based methods.
